Escape Root

Escape Root is a floral art work originally inspired by the tale of Rapunzel and the idea of women being trapped within the home, dependant upon a man for her escape/survival. Plant materials twist and flow out of the window in different directions, the patch work of texture and colour representing the depth and complexity of the female psyche. The sculpture is also perhaps symbolic of the womb and how it transforms through a woman’s life, from birth, to childhood, to adolescence, to pregnancy,  to menopause and eventually death. Can we escape this endless cycle of inherited domesticity and shift the highly gendered expectations on women?
