Home as a place we long for, across all languages and cultures, deeply connected with the land, our ancestral roots and sense of belonging. Home as shifting and temporary, a basic shelter, with intentions to protect but insufficient and unjustifiable. Home as nomadic, moving, off grid. Home as an ideal, a myth, a process of making, imagining and remembering. Home as a place we all want to come back to in the end.
This installation evokes home through a child’s dolls house with welcoming lights, shrouded in a ‘map of care’ by artist, Sophie Mason, brought together with images from the flooded Calais Jungle, free Palestine campaigns and Carningli mountain in the Preselis, exploring personal and politicised notions of home, place, displacement and loss.
For B who made it home, and all those who can't.

Sophie Mason
Sophie Mason is a visual artist and food grower who makes objects shaped by and from her local landscape. For over a decade her work has explored different approaches to the natural world, and in particular our response to environmental breakdown. As well as making objects, she co-produces participatory events and projects exploring how gardens and growing food can change our approach to community, self and ecology. Since becoming a mother six years ago Sophie’s solo practice uses the fabric of a mordanted canvas both to document the marks made from her (and her daughter’s) bodily experiences within the landscape and from the foraged lake pigments and inks that she processes from the mineral and plant based materials she finds around her. Over time the accumulative residue stains the canvas to build a map of care, tracking her relationships with the land around her.
