The Futurists 2024
‘The Futurists’ are conceived of many mobile phone photographs taken over a 7 year span, from the birth of my first daughter through to my second. They aspire to render the present shape of our World; how we simultaneously can ‘see’ and not ‘see’ the rapid changes occurring, whilst imagining what may lie ahead for humanity in this vast evolving landscape of climate change and advanced technology such as AI.
About the Artist
Nienke van Wijk
As a sleep deprived mother with barely anytime to work unless chasing scooters or pushing prams, the juxtaposition between my life and how these images came into being feels apt. There is something poetic about the use of mobile phone photographs, they are fast and immediate, they travel with you and their quality is far from perfect for a professional photographer.
